Hi Reader,
In the past 5 years, we have released 109 podcast episodes of “Brain Box - The Leadership Podcast” of our award winning show, but equally significant was writing 100 newsletters on LinkedIn!
And that is a rather strange number to arrive at when you started writing simply because you had something to say.
Over the course of these 100 editions, I have written about personal branding, LinkedIn, leadership, PR, content, founders, sales, reputation, podcasts, AI and the increasingly blurred line between being good at what you do and being known for it. And somewhere along the way, one idea kept resurfacing:
Expertise has little commercial value if nobody knows it exists.
So, rather than simply celebrating 100 editions, I wanted to go back through them and pull out my favorite 3 ideas that stood the test of time:
1. Visibility is not the same as personal branding One of the most important distinctions I’ve made over the years.
- Visibility answers: Do people know who you are?
- Personal branding asks: What do they believe about you?
You can have enormous reach and still have very little authority. Conversely, someone with a relatively modest audience can become one of the most influential voices within a particular industry.
The objective isn’t simply to become visible. It is to become remembered for something specific. This is "Why Reputation Matters More Than Visibility"
2. Stop measuring visibility only through likes One of the most revealing LinkedIn metrics isn’t necessarily impressions.
It is out-of-network reach. And it's very simple. It's because business doesn't come from "How many people who already know me saw this?”
It is “How many people who didn’t know me yesterday discovered me today?” That is where visibility starts becoming an asset rather than simply a vanity metric. This is "Why Out-of-Network Reach Is the LinkedIn Metric Every Founder Should Track"
3. AI has made original thinking more valuable.
AI has dramatically reduced the cost of producing content - which means content itself is becoming less scarce. And the scarce commodity is increasingly a distinctive point of view.
Your experience. Your stories. Your mistakes. Your contrarian observations. Your frameworks.
AI can amplify expertise. It cannot manufacture the lived experience that makes your expertise worth listening to. This is "How Founders Should Use ChatGPT & AI for Personal Branding"
The ultimate objective isn’t visibility. It’s authority.
- Visibility gets you noticed.
- Consistency gets you recognized.
- Expertise gives people a reason to listen.
- Evidence gives them a reason to believe you.
And over time, those things compound into authority. That is why I don’t believe the future of founder branding is about posting more.
It is about building a coherent digital footprint where your LinkedIn posts, podcasts, videos, newsletters, media features, interviews and ideas all tell the same larger story. Your name should start carrying meaning before you enter the room.
You have to be discoverable. And increasingly, visibility is the new currency. 100 editions done. A new chapter begins.
